Cassandra (2007) exemplifies Mutu’s approach. Executed with ink, paint, mixed media, plant material, and plastic pearls on Mylar, the collage features alien-like, biomorphic figures reaching toward one another. Reminiscent of phytoplankton seen under a microscope, these figures resist being fully seen while simultaneously seeking connection. Mutu has described the work as one of her “drawing poems,” blending nature, history, and personal experience to create striking, evocative imagery that speaks to her perspective as a woman of color in contemporary society.
