Wangechi Mutu (b. 1972, Nairobi, Kenya) is a Kenyan-American artist whose work explores the intersections of gender, identity, race, and the natural world. Mutu combines elements of painting, sculpture, and collage to build immersive artworks that interrogate human relationships, colonial histories, and the vulnerabilities of Black women in contemporary society. Her cutting-and-pasting techniques echo the physical and conceptual fragmentation she addresses, creating layered, otherworldly compositions.
Mutu’s works are held in prominent international collections and have been widely exhibited, including major solo exhibitions at Victoria Miro Gallery, London, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.
