Elizabeth Neel and Evanly Schindler discussed Neel's painting practice, interests, and influences, ranging from art-historical titans like Francis Bacon, medical imaging and its relation to image-making, and natural phenomena such as bilateral symmetry. Their conversation explored how the sociopolitical and technological realities of the moment inform contemporary abstract art, creating potential commonalities and ruptures with Abstract Expressionist painters of The Lost Generation.
The talk was presented as a part of The Lost Generation: Then & Now, BlackBook’s summer exhibition tracing the legacy of Abstract Expressionism and its ongoing influence on contemporary abstraction. The exhibition is on view at BlackBook Art Gallery through September 30th. Educational programming for The Lost Generation is presented in collaboration with the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center.
