About

Columbian-born artist Iván Argote’s study of the human experience through sculpture, installations, and videography draws on his education in both political science and fine arts. His work questions historical narratives and power structures, often by employing irony and humor. While Argote’s institutional appeal is strong, he enjoys using public spaces to showcase his art incorporating ideas of accessibility and shared responsibility.

Wild Flowers: A Foot, 2021 and Wild Flowers: Left Index, 2021 merge the human form with botanical structures; here, the body is a vessel for growth and natural interactions. The stark juxtaposition between the bronze casting and living plants adds a natural dynamic to sculptural tradition. Intended for outdoor display, its natural patina aims to reflect a dialogue between art and nature.

Iván Argote has received numerous awards, including the Prix SAM (2011), the Audi Talent Award (2013), the Cisneros Fontanals Foundation Prize (2015), and a nomination for the prestigious Marcel Duchamp Prize (2022). His works are held in major international collections such as the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), Banco de la República in Bogotá, and the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation in Miami amounts many more. In 2024 Iván made headlines with his 20ft sculpture (Dinosaur), temporarily installed on the New York City Highline, in a blatant contrast between nature, art, and society.
