In Untitled (Ndebele abstract), 2017, the legacy and traditions of the Ndebele nation are distilled into rhythmic compositions of sharply defined color fields and black linear boundaries. The works appear minimal, but they are rich with meaning: a reflection of matriarchal knowledge, repetition as memory, and the visual poetry of daily life. Rather than echoing modernism, Mahlangu re-centers it—reminding us that abstraction, for many, is not a new invention, but an old inheritance.
