About

This early work captures Jean-Michel Basquiat at the threshold—before full market canonization, but already articulating thevisual language that would define his impact. The simplified, almost schematic figures oscillate between diagram and body, signaling his interest in systems, codes, and fractured identity. Here, figuration is not yet explosive, but emergent—testing howmeaning can be constructed from symbols, gesture, and interruption.

Positioned at the intersection of graffiti, drawing, and painting, these works reflect the raw intellectual energy of downtown NewYork at the start of the 1980s. Where The Lost Generation mines collapse, Basquiat begins to build a new syntax from it—onethat remains unstable, searching, and open.
