About

Though Lee Krasner was one of the foundational figures of abstract expressionism, her contributions were historically overshadowed for decades by the mythology surrounding Jackson Pollock and the male-dominated New York School. Working from Springs, East Hampton, Krasner developed a independent visual language built from gesture, fragmentation, rhythm, and continual reinvention, helping establish the Hamptons as a lasting center of postwar American art.

Created for the Museum of Modern Art publication In Memory of My Feelings, honoring poet Frank O’Hara, this lithograph reflects the deep relationship between postwar abstraction, poetry, and downtown New York culture during the 1950s and 1960s. Krasner’s energetic splashes and looping gestures evoke both Pollock’s all-over compositions and her own lyrical late style. Here, language and abstraction dissolve into one another, allowing emotion, spontaneity, and movement to operate simultaneously across the surface.

Robert Motherwell, the project's art director, selected 30 artists: Nell Blaine, Norman Bluhm, Joe Brainard, John Button, Giorgio Cavallon, Allan D'Arcangelo, Elaine de Kooning, Willem de Kooning, Niki de Saint Phalle, Helen Frankenthaler, Jane Freilicher, Michael Goldberg, Philip Guston, Grace Hartigan, Al Held, Jasper Johns, Matsumi Kanemitsu, Alex Katz, Lee Krasner, Alfred Leslie, Roy Lichtenstein, Marisol, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Reuben Nakian, Barnett Newman, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers and Jane Wilson.

Krasner represents both the intellectual and emotional core of the New York School and the generations of artists who expanded its legacy beyond its original mythology.
