Yayoi Kusama

About

Yayoi Kusama has long been fascinated with nature, often employing repeated natural figures, such as pumpkins and flowers, in her work, once noting, “I spend every day embracing flowers.” A sculptural piece featuring floral forms, Increment in The Spring, 1986, symbolizes the idea of rebirth and growth in the Spring. The sculpture also features Kusama’s iconic polka dots, which are inspired by nature and the infinite possibilities of the universe, with each dot serving as a symbol for stars, and the ways in which we interact with nature and each other.“Polka dots can’t stay alone,” she has said of the figures. “When we obliterate nature and our bodies with polka dots, we become part of the unity of our environments.”
