Marsden Hartley was an American Modernist painter from Lewiston, Maine. Despite spending years living in Cleveland, New York City, and across Europe, Hartley had a particular affinity for Maine and its picturesque natural settings, including Mount Katahdin, which served as the primary inspiration for his work.
